For years I have dreamt of the day where my name would be the one on the door. It would be my way, my rules, and most importantly my kind of coffee in the Kuerig machine.
When it was going to happen I would have this plan of how to and here’s what is next. It would be everything I wanted it to be and more. Well… what people don’t prepare you for is that no matter how “bad-ass” you are at your career… nothing prepares you for making the leap from “career” to “building an empire”.
These are 5 things I wish someone would have told me before I went head first in, and how I am still overcoming them today.
1. There will never ever be enough time in the day… EVER.
You think working 9-5 and watching the clock is the biggest torture of your life? Picture this… It is 6:30 pm you hear your kids running around like animals downstairs as you are trying to get in another 10 phone calls before it becomes “socially inappropriate” to call someone. You are frantically trying to figure out how you are going to get it all done when suddenly you realize… It’s Thursday. Holy crap… tomorrow is Friday which means omg NO!!!! The weekend is coming!!!!!!!!!! This is the reality of what is my life.
Welcome… cozy up and have a nice warm glass of “AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT”.
2. Close Amazon. Just close it. Don’t even look.
Step away from the multi colored file folders that you don’t need. Don’t be tempted and don’t even bother trying to convince yourself you do. You also don’t need the following…. sticky notes, paperclips in all colors, a new I phone case, 50 mugs that represent your “brand”, or even the irreplaceable Doggie calendar that will help you organize your days
No one cares that you are an amazon prime member and get free shipping in 1 day. Just Stop!
3. You are never better than another business owner.
See those people sitting across from you at your local networking group? Yeah… those people dressed in business attire eating sweet potato fries as you give them your 30 second commercial about how awesome you are. They are your peers in a world that needs more of us. You are and will never be “better” than them. Pick their brains and use them. By opening up your mind to some ideas they have (silly or not) together you can build a better idea.
4. Find a group of people that will kick your butt into gear
We all have that “friend” that tells us how it is. Tells us you should never have short hair, never wear cropped jeans again (that’s right I heard what you said Nicole and I listened), and puts it all out there in plain sight when we don’t want to admit we need to make changes. I myself had one of these moments earlier today where I had to humble myself and ask for a pep talk that would get me out of a funk and set me back on pace for my race ahead. These mentors, friends, and colleagues are key. Find them, love them, buy them chocolates.
5. You must really love what you do
If I were to decide to open up a massage studio tomorrow I would quit before my day started (but keep all the essential oils because let’s be honest… they smell amazing). Same with me doing anything except being an insurance agent. No one said anything about having the perfect day every day if you are loving what you do, because… let’s be serious, there are days where I want to never hear the word Comprehensive or Collision coverage again. However, the major difference is that I would miss it. It’s a part of me. Find the part of you that you couldn’t live without and figure out a way to be great at it and make money while doing it.
The money will come.
The success will come (or your definition of it).
However, the one thing I can most certainly guarantee is that there will be a day when you will be sitting at your computer and you will stare blankly and think how did this happen?
Trust me…. I know this… because I just had it.
We all have to learn to be better versions of ourselves and I am continuously learning how to adapt and grow my business to become what I had dreamt it would be years ago.
I get overwhelmed, have an urge to buy new heels that represent my brand, and I emotionally eat with the best of them.
We all make mistakes, we all have to make choices that aren’t easy, but for me I have always needed to keep one key component in mind… I am not alone. Small business’ are changing the world every day. If you are one or thinking of becoming one I would encourage you to sit back and as my friend said to me today… “enjoy the ride”… because every moment is worth it.
